making a pl into a 2.0L
Hi all
Is it posible to make a 16v pl into a 2l engine?
I have the crankshaft and the pistonrods from a 2E engine, then all i need is pistons from a 9A or ABF engine right? and bore up the cylinders..
Am i right? is the pl block high enougth?? is it posible?

Re: making a pl into a 2.0L
Hi,
The crankshaft should be identical to those installed into the 9A. But the pistonrods of the 2E engine are to long, they're for the tallblock engines as the 2E, ADY, ABF and alot more Golf 3 engines. To convert your PL into a 9A, use in addition to the 2E crankshaft the pistons and rods of the 9A. PL Block has to be overbored up to 82.5mm. Eventually you need some grinding in the crankshaft housing to allow the crankshaft to rotate properly.

Cool thanks for the answer, just what i needet to hear, where is the cheepest place to buy 9A pistonrods and pistons ?
Would the original pl pistonrods do ?? or are they to short??
And is there any differens between 9A and ABF pistons??

Re: making a pl into a 2.0L
I think you'Re right. I'm unsure wether 9A pistons and PL pistons do have the same piston bar diameter, but I think they should be identical. If time isn't critial, just buy only the pistons first and have a look.
A good place to get 9A pistons are popular corrado and passat forums, in germany that whould be www.vwcorrado-forum.de and www.vwcorrado.de in case of the corrado. I'm not very familiar with passats, have a go at google.de
ABF was (has been? not sure wether to use past or present perfect here
) a new development. To reduce lateral forces (in this case the sideway forces applied on pistons and rods), rod lengh was increased. This trick was also used on the 8V engines as e.g. the 2E. The aim was to gain less wear while still being able to rev up to 7200rpm. There are other differences in cylinderhead and engine management, but it's a long story. In most cases (nearly every case), 9A will do just fine.

Re: making a pl into a 2.0L
Yes, very easy. Look at the backside of the airbox, between airbox and dome. There is a small grey "box" (hydraulic pressure adjuster) with 2 screws, wired by a cable. Take the screws out. Warning, remaining fuel pressure might result in a fuel shot, wear glasses or cover the box with a piece of cloth. In addtion to that, be sure not to lose those two green sealing rings that are attached between the grey box and the rest. Then, in the grey box, there is a screw. Take it out, be sure not to lose it, it's very short but has a fine thread. Taken out, it reveals a very tiny six-edge screw. Turn this screw JUST A QUARTER ROUND (1/4) CLOCKWISE. This should be enough to supply enought fuel for the additional displacment. Reassamble everything as it was, finished.
