Yes, it should be possible to fit a 16v engine (KR or PL code) into a Mk1, there are several folks in Germany that have done that, not sure whether any of them "live" on this forum, tho'. As to how to do it, I'm afaraid I cannot give you all the gory details. You'll need to rewire everything (obviously), upgrade brakes, hoses etc to accommodate for the extra power.
